Here on the ESS blog we aim to demonstrate WHY pre-employment screening verification is so important across all industries. Whether you are in the medical field, manufacturing, real estate, or any other industry, business owners must be made aware of how vital it is to perform a pre-employment verification for a possible potential employee, that is why we talk about stories like this one today, to point to situations where the “worst-case scenario” is reality, and could potentially have been avoided. Many companies end up losing out due to a weak prioritization of employment screening services.
Let’s take a look at this unfortunate recent news story out of Harrisburg, PA, where a woman has been sentenced for stealing drugs from a hospice patient.
Home Care on the Rise
You may or may not know this, but for the first time, the number of people over 65 outnumbers the number of kids under 5. What does this mean? Well, it means that nursing home and home health care is going to be a booming industry as this generation of baby boomers moves into the senior care age range. More and more individuals are going to need care, and need caring staff.
Home Health Care Theft
According to the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Dana Aldinger, age 55 of York, Pennsylvania was sentenced to one-year probation and a $525 fine for theft in connection with health care. She will also permanently surrender her nursing license for the crime.
According to the DOJ Press Release, Aldinger had been a Licensed Practical Nurse and Administrator for a personal care home for senior citizens. She stole and diverted Oxycodone pills prescribed to a Medicare hospice patient around August of 2019. In addition to the theft, she also falsified medical records to conceal her diversion of the medications.
Who Can You Trust?
As we are all getting older, our parents or older family members will need more care. There are specific background checks and exclusion lists that individuals like this end up on if they slip up. This is but one way the federal government tries to prevent individuals like this from ever practicing medicine in our country again, but as we have seen and spoken about here on the blog, there are sometimes individuals who are able to sneak through the system. The opioid epidemic has wreaked havoc on our country. As we can see in this story, people can be willing to risk everything for drugs.
Protect Patients and Your Reputation
This startling example of a trusted, licensed nurse going to these lengths to steal opioids from a hospice patient is a cold reminder of why background screening is so important. It’s something we talk about often here on the blog, if you were the owner of this home care company, and an LPN was caught stealing medication from one of your patients, what do you think people would think of your company’s integrity? This home care example relates directly to healthcare exclusion lists, but it’s not limited to the healthcare industry.
The same goes for any company owner, if you own a tree business and one of your seasonal workers is high on the job and takes a fall, what do you think happens next? Having a comprehensive drug screening package should be a part of any successful business plan in 2022, as the opioid epidemic has yet to go away. Individuals who are addicted and employed are dangerous to themselves and others.
